The Matrix, Plato and Descartes Essay Example

The Matrix, Plato and Descartes Essay Example The Matrix, Plato and Descartes Paper The Matrix, Plato and Descartes Paper The Matrix. There is a super computer that controls the reality of all humans. Neo, a character in the movie, realizes that the Matrix is not real. Morpheme helps him to come to this realization that his life was not real, that a super computer was programming his thoughts, and experiences. All the humans were In this huge machine with their brains connected to a bunch of wires, and their thoughts were being Inputted by the computer. In Plats Allegory of the Cave, there is a similar situation. In his description of the prisoners of the cave, the prisoners ere chained down, and only able to look a wall. There was a fire behind them and shadows from other walking by were played out on the wall for the prisoners to see. They believed the shadows to be real. When one of the prisoners were released, they perceived the real world in actuality, and the shadows they perceived to be real were not. Like in The Matrix, they believed only what they perceived. In Descanters Meditation I of the Things of Which May Doubt, he says he will doubt everything he believes unless he Is absolutely certain of the truth of the belief. He believes that our knees can deceive us on many levels. Descanters also says when we dream we can never be sure what Is real and what Is a dream. The salutary of Descanters with The Matrix and Allegory of the Cave Is the evil demon theory. He believes that he Is being deceived by an evil demon of all senses and knowledge (Foreman Dew, 2012). That the evil demon is allowing us to perceive what he wants us to perceive. How do we know the world we are experiencing is real? All we know has been taught to us by our senses and perception on how we sense these things. I believe by ouch, sight, smell, and all these things are real to me. I believe in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. That Jesus died on the cross for our sins. This is the real world to me. I have faith in our Lord that what we are experiencing is real and not some dream or alternate reality. At the end of the Allegory of the Cave, Socrates explained that most men would want to escape the cave and see reality as It really Is. In The Matrix; however, In his betrayal of Morpheme, Cipher implies that it is better to live in the artificial world of the Matrix. Cipher believed that ignorance is bliss. For me, I would like to know what reality really is. Ignorance is bliss can be a nice thing, but something always happens to make you doubt what is really going on. When that happened you truly believe that you have been deceived and everything you thought to be true is not. Most of our knowledge is based on sense experience, and they are not always accurate. How can we be truly certain of our beliefs? Personally, I know about the senses not being accurate. I am legally blind, and hard of hearing. Much of my world is not truly how It Is perceived. I rely on what my family and friends tell me. What makes me certain of my beliefs Is my faith In our Lord. A few years ago, I might have questioned everything based on my senses not being accurate. How do I know that I am truly seeing or hearing whats in front of me. My faith in the Lord has leaded me through everything. References Foreman, Mark Dew, Jar. J. (2012) How Certain Can We Be? Diversity in Organizations Essay

Diversity in Organizations Essay Diversity in Organizations Essay Diversity in Organizations Gregory Wright BUS 610 Organizational Behavior Peggy Morrison Monday April 9, 2012 Most people agree that cultural diversity in our workplaces utilizes our country’s skills to its fullest, and contributes to our overall growth and prosperity. The reality of this situation is that progress is slow. While we are in the midst of the longest period of economic growth this country has ever seen, the gap between the â€Å"haves â€Å" and â€Å"haves nots† continues to widen. One of the main reasons for this has been the lack of diversity in corporate America. When a diverse workforce is not developed form top down, African, Hispanic, and Asian Americans are unfairly relegated to lower-skilled, lower-pay positions and are not able to fulfill their true potential. Diversity is and should be an important component for every organization in today’s business climate. The workplace has been growing ever more diverse since the late 1960’s, with important laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 giving various groups greater equality and increased rights in the workplace. Diversity has increased because the workforce has seen an increase of people such as: women, people with different sexual orientations, immigrants, those with minority groups or representing a minority religion, and those with disabilities. Companies that understand and integrate these differences into their company culture stand to gain a great deal of various opinions and input when it comes to the company’s overall operational tactics. Organizational culture can be loosely defined as the shared assumptions, beliefs, and normal behaviors of a group. This group consists of the individuals within a company and each individual person in the company contributes their ideas, based partially on their beliefs and experiences outside of the workplace, to affect how the workplace operates. Companies that embrace the different perspectives and opportunities that can be offered with a diverse workforce allow opportunities for more constructive and effective performance in the company. In addition the company culture also dictates how the company operates on a daily basis, down to the basic structure of the company. I read in one article that company culture can be composed differently; either as a structured or unstructured and as a friendly or more market based culture focusing on results instead of friendliness among employees. It is also important to understand an organizations culture so that the proper direction can be given. Additionally, gathering input from the employees and overlooking the company’s cultural composition, including the future company vision would allow company leaders to create an environment that allows the company culture to mesh with a diverse workforce. It will more than likely be difficult for companies to undergo such an in-depth o f their cultural and diverse compositions, but an understanding of the most basic company principles will allow the successful company to build a company culture that engenders a diverse workforce to propel the company forward to heightened success. Companies that expend the time and effort to embrace, understand, and develop diversity approaches will see a company culture that works harder, creates a more hospitable working environment, and ultimately increases company profitability. Culturally diverse organizations experience a wealth of benefits, including more ideas from a widely diverse group of people, which when aligned, will create more energy expendable on reaching unified company goals. One of the core values of the United States is equal opportunity and favoritism of an

The Companies Act Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4500 words

The Companies Act - Essay Example Not only the shareholders and directors of the companies being freshly incorporated but those of the companies that are already in existence need to study the general duties of the directors in the Act. Executive Summary: The companies Act in 2006 are a pioneering law contemporary times that places great moral and social responsibility on the directors of the companies. Definitely, UK has taken the lead in calling for a more mature and responsible behavior on part of the Directors of a company. The Companies Act 2006 replaces the companies of 1985 and 1989. The Act, it is hoped, will usher in an era of the more responsible role for people in business leading to â€Å"enlightened shareholder approach†. The shareholders will hold the directors more accountable for their acts leading to the generation of awareness for the social and physical environment. The government feels that business atmosphere, society, and the environment are inextricably linked to each other and the positive or negative fallout of one affects the others. The registration of companies started in 1848. Earlier in the Companies Act of 1948 originated the â€Å"True and Fair View† (Bucheery, n.d.). This entailed upon the directors to give a true and fair view of the fiscal position of the company and the profit and loss were reflected in the annual balance sheet for the knowledge of shareholders. Later this system was incorporated in the fourth directive of Company Accounts of the European Economic Commission (Flint, 1982). Earlier the refrain in the corporate world was to maximize profits at any cost. But with the world coming together due to globalization and the experience of negative fallouts of the trade and commerce like emission of greenhouse gases, deforestation, and a yawning gap between the developing and the developed world, a need was felt for enactment of a law that required greater business transparency, a commitment to the social and physical environment and reinforcement of confidence of the people in business sys tems.

Strategies Used by Wal-Mart Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Strategies Used by Wal-Mart - Essay Example For the small and medium enterprises, Wal-Mart has a â€Å"Sam’s Warehouse club† where member businesses can buy retail and office items at cheaper rates. In serving both these customer segments, the key strategy of Wal-Mart is to maintain price leadership. Its business is based on the premise that Wal-Mart can guarantee the best (lowest) price to its customers. This best price guarantee is reflected in what they call is their â€Å"Every Day Low Price† (EDLP) program. Wal-Mart gets this price advantage mainly through a two-pronged strategy. The first lever to ensure low price is their economy of scale, and the second lever is the global sourcing which allows them an â€Å"arbitrage opportunity† between supplier prices across a broad spectrum of geography which other retailers may not be able to access. The second key element of strategy for Wal-Mart is to address the sustainability and environmental issues. Due to the nature of its business, Wal-Mart and other retailers are constantly under pressure from NGOs and other activists to render the business more environment friendly and more socially responsible. Therefore, Wal-Mart’s strategy is to work closely and transparently with several organizations to address these issues and to provide an annual update on these elements in their annual report. This strategy helps Wal-Mart maintain its friendly image and prevents customers sensitive to these issues from moving away from Wal-Mart. Expected changes in their strategy to expand the business The retail business is under pressure from several fronts. From direct and indirect retail competitors (large store based retailers and small neighborhood shops), from pressure due to poor economic condition causing less security and job losses, and from emerging technologies (e-commerce and mobile commerce) which can entire alter the retail business landscape. These pressures are also bound to affect the profitability of their operations. T hus, Wal-Mart can be expected to bring in several strategic changes that enhance their productivity and lower costs. Further, in order to respond to these challenges, Wal-Mart can be expected to being several strategic changes to their sales operations as well including changing the current store plans, introducing new store formats, and scaling up its e-commerce operations. Wal-Mart realizes that current stores need to be made more relevant to the customer; that is expanding the assortment of products offered. In order to do this, they may need to not only generate more supplier contracts but also alter the allocation of their retailing pace. Further, in order to counter the competition from small local stores, Wal-Mart can be expected to introduce new retail formats – neighborhood stores/convenience stores. As the volumes and variety of products at these stores is expected to be lower than in their traditional large retail stores, they could be expected to make significant changes in their supply chain for serving these retail stores too. Next, as internet-based and now mobile-based commerce is becoming increasingly important, they can be expected to increase their investment in providing solutions for these opportunities. The Evaluation of Tsotsi Essay Example for Free

The Evaluation of Tsotsi Essay He is in one of the gangs there. He leaves from his parents when he is young because he has a bad father who always hits him and blames him, and his mother is suffering from a disease. He feels alone, so he goes to stay with other homeless people. He grows up with them, and lives with them in large, concrete construction pipes. He has to become independent when he is young. The most important scene in the movie is the robbery case. A cold-blooded person, Tsotsi tries to steal a rich woman’s car and money. While he is stealing her car, he discovers that there is a baby in the back seat of the car. When he hears the baby cry, he is reminded of his childhood. Out of guilt, he decides to take on the responsibility and take care of the baby. After the first time of trying, he realizes that he is not able to take care of the baby. Then, he meets Miriam, the actress Terry Pheto, who has an infant, and threatens her to feed the baby. These matters make Tsotsi to embark on his painful process. This movie has an excellent opening, ending and delivery which can draw the audience’s attention. Also, the cameramen use the high quality of skills which can strongly reflect the situation in Africa. Moreover, characters are one of the souls of the movie which the emotion toward the audience can light up a whole movie. Lastly, this movie can reflect the social problems in Africa which we need to treasure what we have. At the beginning of the movie, on the train, Tsotsi and his friends try to steal money. This compact opening catches the audience’s attention. Besides, this movie has a little flashback to the childhood of Tsotsi, apart from the flashback memories of childhood that Tsotsi himself experiences early in the film. The viewers can clearly understand the reason behind how he becomes a robber. The viewer will not get confused because this movie is quite straightforward and clear. The story move step by step. Actually, it shows the time line from getting the baby accidently in the car to giving back the baby to her parents. The movie is mainly surrounding the kidnapping case. Furthermore, at the end of the movie, it is the turning point of Tsotsi which can see him change from hatred to care of a person. At that time, Tsotsi feels regret, and he is planning to give back the baby to her parents. When he arrives in their house, he stays for a long time and tries to talk with her parents. The audience will start getting irritated because they know the police are coming, they dont want Tsotsi to get caught. They will feel confused. Nevertheless, this movie has a great ending which provide a theme for the audience to discuss. It shows that Tsotsi raises his arms to the policemen, and all aiming their guns at him. What happens next? Does Tsotsi surrender? Or do the police shoot him? All of these are the possible thing that might happen. The filmmakers choose this wonderful ending because they want the audience to think of the movie and guess if there will be another episode following to continue. This is a smart way to promote a movie. Moreover, the lighting effect is one of the attraction points. Cameramen are one the souls of each movie; how the audience invests in the movie relies on the cameramen. This is a praiseworthy achievement of the cameramen; they do a great job in this movie. This film that includes wonderful and very convincing performances gives an extraordinary spiritual power. Most scenes take place either at night or in the early morning; shooting at night is always difficult, and the cameramen have to keep watching for the correct environment lighting conditions. But the cameramen still can catch a specific moment; this shows that they have a good skills. In addition, Tsot ¬si, played by Presley Chweneyagae, acts very well in this movie. His emotional expression can influence the other actors, and put them into their own characters deeply. Besides, he shows his emotion toward to the baby, and he can convey his emotion to the audience too. These emotions can light up the whole movie. When Tsotsi sees Miriam is feeding the baby, the viewer can know how poor the childhood of Tsotsi is, and the viewer can see he really wants a mother’s love. In addition, this movie has a strong emotional line between the baby and Tsotsi. Tsotsi has already built up a relationship with the baby. The baby seems like his sister. In the movie, Tsotsi says, â€Å"The baby is mine,† which mean he really cares about the baby. He doesn’t want to lose it. Finally, this movie is the hottest topic in the third world. This movie, Tsotsi, shows the social problems in Africa, like homelessness, and famine. Everyone born is a present from God. We are unique and pure. No one is supposed to be a thief or evil. Tsotsi also is kindhearted when he looks at the baby. Unluckily, the community always forces him to do bad things. If he doesn’t follow the rules; he will be killed by. Besides, in the movie, Tsotsi lives in a slum, which shows how poor life is. Is it fate? So, we need to be glad that we are living in such a peaceful and bountiful place. Everything is not inevitable; we need to treasure what we have and not compare with the others. Through this movie, the viewers will learn the living standard in Africa, and they can understand what kinds of problems it has. All the main and minor characters and plotlines that are explored probably deserve appreciation, as overall they all play their parts well. All of the characters are significant. The emotion expressed is excellent. It’s a movie that will influence people, and the viewers have to pay attention to understand the meaning inside. This movie also won the 2005 Academy Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. So, Tsotsi is a remarkable movie that you must watch, and it has a strong meaning.

IMPAIRMENT AWARE ROUTING In WDM technology, the capacity of a fiber is divided into several subscribers by using light paths. In these paths traffic flows. Traffic between a pair of nodes may not fill up the available bandwidth of a light path. The network performance is affected by the transmission impairments which are due to the non ideal optical components. Since we have optical amplifier, optical switches and other optical devices and soon we have all optical equipments with the time and it is possibility that the entire network will be optical network. Transparent Optical Network Opaque Network There are two types of networks. These are opaque network and transparent network. In opaque network we have to do Optical-Electrical-Optical conversion at all nodes in the path. This type of network is costly because if we make a nationwide network then we will have to use a large no. of routers. But to make it less expensive we can use translucent network. In translucent network the regeneration is done only on a few nodes instead of all nodes. Transparent Network The other network that is transparent is less costly because there is no need of OEO conversion at the intermediate nodes. We can send analog signal in the transparent network. The size of transparent network is determined by impairments effects such as Chromatic dispersion (CD), attenuation, crosstalk, noise etc. Effects of Transmission Impairments on Routing and Wavelength Assignment When signal travels from source to destination then it may be ruined by linear and non-linear impairments. Linear impairments are amplifier noise, Group velocity dispersion (GVD), polarization mode dispersion (PMD), component crosstalk. The nonlinear impairments are self-phase modulation... ...s called Physical layer blocking. Advantages ïÆ'Ëœ Network load decreases by using IABP and IAFF ïÆ'Ëœ About 30 % reduction in blocking ïÆ'Ëœ Call admission criteria not only depends on the resource availability but also on quality of light path’s signal ïÆ'Ëœ A light path with good signal quality ïÆ'Ëœ Network resources are in intelligent control ïÆ'Ëœ Network used more efficiently Disadvantages ïÆ'Ëœ This technology cannot compute a route with minimal impairments ïÆ'Ëœ To find a qualified route path for the connection request it needs more than one trial ïÆ'Ëœ Algorithm does not consider residual-dispersion accumulation, power divergence, polarization-dependent loss gain (PDLIPDG), filter concatenation, signal transient, fiber nonlinearities. ïÆ'Ëœ When the data rate increases to 40 Gbps and furthermore, impairments become even more difficult ïÆ'Ëœ As load increases the call blocking increases

Juan sumulong thesis

On the intent of social relationships, how can someone be significant to another person? Significance is defined as the quality of being important and having notable worth or influence, (Merriam-Webster Incorporated, 2014). It Is Interaction between different levels of power: between formal and Informal, the private and the state, the centre and locates, (Valve, 1995). How is significance related to history? These two words, though different in meaning go on along together very well for someone who is significant will be written in history. His significance might be positive or negative but he posted such a huge impact into the development of his locality, he will definitely be written. Jose Racial, Andrea Boniface, Emilio Gondola, Emilio Action, Melcher Aquinas etc. , one can easily recognize these names for they have served as the pillars of the independence we are enjoying right now. These people have touched thousands of lives and created such a huge impact not only because of the ir personalities, but on the qualities they have shown that made them a leader on their own localities. To be a man is one thing, to be a great man is another. In Antipodal City, one might have taken a bumpy ride on the Assuming Highway, taken stroll at Assuming park and seen the golden monument of a man that mistakenly dubbed as â€Å"Jose Racial† by passersby, finished basic education in Juan Assuming Elementary School and acquired secondary education in Assuming Memorial Circle. Assuming. Antipodeans seemed to be very fond of this name. If one will be asked, he would point out the golden statue at the plaza but moreover that no one can recognize this great man. Most of them seemed to take him for granted.According to Nick Joaquin, the identity of the Filipino today is of a person asking what his identity is. One may reflect the same on the situation of Antipodal City. On the advent of modernization internet, social sites, virtual world, one can possibly forget who he is and neglect the heritage of the past bestowed upon him. That was the problem the researchers felt the need to address, the researchers believe that history could be the answer. History has played a major part on the development of a nation. Great leaders are written in history not only to broadcast what he has done, but to serve as an inspiration to every person.Inspiration is what most of Filipinos needs in these days especially the youth, the hope of this land. The long quest of young Antipodeans for their identity is over, Juan Assuming y Marquee, the favorite son of Antipodal, a statesman who is always ahead of his time. 1 Objective of the Study In every study being conducted there are objectives that need to be satisfied. Researchers' main goal upon conducting the study is to commemorate such great image of a public servant in these times that our country is dwelling to problems.Bringing back the nobility and patriotism, Don Juan Assuming expressed during his time to remind the pe ople that Antipodal has produced one of the best political innovator. The researchers also believe that this could be an eye opener for all public servants on how important their role is in shaping the community and promoting common good. Of the picture, it is how Antipodeans preserve and take care of these inheritance to realize that no matter where they go, Antipodal is always their one and only home and that nothing could take that away from them. Statement of the Problem The following stated problems are what the researchers intended to seek in order to create a fully established study: 1 Who is Don Juan Assuming? 1 How is he related to Antipodal City? What are the characteristics that made him a distinguished as a local hero of Antipodeans? 1 How did he expressed his deep love for the nation? 2 What makes him noble? 3 What makes him charismatic? 3 How lasting his influences are? 1 In the family? 2 On the National Politics? 4 What were his contributions? 1 On the founding of Rac ial Province? 2 Enduring Legacy? 5 Is the local government doing efforts to commemorate his nobility? . 3 Significance of the Study Generations through generations, cultures being passed on, the faith on the Virgin of Antipodal never dies. Today, Antipodal City is known by the best thing it could offer at eight: the city lights view, but before all the fascinations the city has been offering, people sometimes forget the real people who first loved and was really devoted on making Antipodal to live in. Here are identified lists of the people who will benefit in this study: The Filipinos, who are enjoying the benefits of democracy, this study serves to remind them to exercise their rights habitually. For lots of people who sacrificed their lives to attain what they have right now, one of them is Don Juan Assuming. The National Historical Commission, being the core historical body of the nation. May this study convince them to exert extensive efforts on preserving the past. And to addre ss to them the felt need to improve the dissemination of information of history to each and every Filipino citizen. The Antipodeans, for them to realize that one of their fellow statesmen expressed his patriotism to the nation and to Racial Province. And for them to take good care of this inheritance of a perfect symbol for political values. The Local Government of Antipodal City, this study should serve as stimulation for them to formulate programs to educate the people about the significance of Don Juan Assuming and use him as inspiration to honestly serve the city of Antipodal. The to appreciate Antipodal as much as Don Assuming loved his town and the locals. The Assuming Family, who is synonymous to the culture of excellence, achievement, integrity and service; a name trusted and tested of time. This study is to thank them for opening to the researchers a large chapter in their lives, Don Juan Assuming.May this study further inspire their unending desire to help others. The Juan Assuming Elementary School, an educational institution that has been a potent instrument in having the dreams of thousands of Antipodeans, may this study serve as their inspiration to produce more competitive students for they are carrying out such name of integrity. The Assuming Memorial High School, for the educators of the institution to realize that they are agents of change and may this study guide them to follow the values Don Assuming such as vivid display of nationalism and genuine service of the nation.Don Juan Marquee Assuming, whose story is worth telling, this study is to uncover and explore more of his efforts to sincerely serve the Racial Province and the people. In this way the researchers would like to express their deepest gratitude in being one of the finest public servants who truly served the nation according to his principle and ideals, a true gem of Antipodal City. 4 Scope and Limitation This study entitled Undying Nobility: A Narrative Analysis on the Signific ance of Don Juan Assuming to Antipodeans, concerns itself about on the contributions of Don Juan Assuming to the development of Antipodal City today. This study is in a narrative style for it only tells and explains his legacy and the effect he has to Antipodeans especially the young minds. First is to know Juan Assuming better; a brief overview on who he is, second; are his characteristics that make him a significant historical figure of Antipodal City, third; is to identify the broad of his influence not only as the brains of opposition but also as a father of his clan, fourth; is to recognize all of his contributions not only in the province of Racial but also in the whole nation. This study will no longer tackle about the misconceptions of the young ones and the distinguished strategic solutions on how to properly orient the Antipodeans about him and how to strengthen the state of heritage tourism of Antipodal City. To gather reliable and concrete data the respondents were chosen carefully, first are the ones who are very close to Don Juan Summons heart, those who had never forgotten him, his family. They are the ones who will never forget what he has done and live up to his ideals and visions.Other than the family, a public servant who is inspired by his ideals and love for the city is asked to be interviewed for additional supporting details; and lastly the researchers conducted an interview with a historian who verified the data that have been collected. The setting was set to find accurate and consistent information only at Antipodal City wherein the center of study is concentrated. 2. 0 Review of Related Literature 1 Theoretical Framework leadership effectiveness.Researchers analyzed physical and psychological traits, or qualities, such as high level, appearance, aggressiveness, self-reliance, persuasiveness, and dominance on an effort to identify a set of traits that all successful leaders possessed. The researchers see the trait theory as the most eff ective theory that will guide the study. Trait theory of leadership generally considered the first modern theory of adhering became popular during the second half of the twentieth century and despite scholarly criticism has continued to be popular. The theory states that certain innate traits are common to leaders. Although the identified traits vary the most common are intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity, and sociability. In 1948, Ralph Melvin Stodgily said that in specific set of traits determined who would lead across the variety of different situations. As a result of his studies, he concluded that leadership was not the result of certain traits within the individual lone, but of the relationship between an individual and the social situation in which the individual found him or herself. In 1974, Stodgily conducted a second survey. His conclusion was based on a comparison of new studies with his original ones, was more balanced. His first survey implied that si tuation was the guiding factor in determining leadership; the second one concluded that both traits and situations determined leadership. James M. Souses and Barry Z. Poster made a major contribution to trait theory. In early sass's more than 1500 managers responded to their survey in which they asked, â€Å"What values do you look for in your superiors? Of the 225 values, characteristics, and attitudes compiled from the answers the top four were being honest, forward looking, inspiring, and competent. They called these being credible. It only shows that in a particular group or locality, an effective leader is needed in order for its' growth and progression. 2. 2 Literature Review An individual becomes noble when it shows great impact to its locality and is significant to its people. Nobility stood for social superiority. It is a reward for service rendered to the state. It is a quality that the sovereign power imprints upon private errors, so as to raise them and their descendants above the other citizens, (Greenfield, 1992). Nobility was associated with good character, moral worth, magnanimity, and ethical goodness. Nobles thus united to one another and easily recognize by others, (Robinson, 2001). To be noble is to have political power. It is impossible to achieve noble status without first exercising considerable power to get there, (Poster, 2004, p. 110).Significance on the other hand is defined as the quality of being important and interaction between different levels of power: between formal and informal, the riveter and the state, the centre and localities, (Vine, 1995). As a baseball legend Jackie Robinson once noted â€Å"life is not significant except for its impact on other lives†, (Maxwell, 2013). The researchers found these two words: nobility and significance are intertwined together. As the gathered various sources of data support that a person who is in a way influential and great is noble and significant. Now, how does history takes pl ace in it? History is shaped through diverse events done by man in the earlier period which have great impacts to present time. History as well plays a vital role in the identity of man. It is the building of personal and collective identity through â€Å"memory', the social, cultural, and political use and function of â€Å"narrating the past,† and the psychological structures of remembering, repressing, and recalling. Thus, a man is the product of his past. Whoever he is today is the result of the past he has. Filipinos of today are identified and linked to its olden times. It is said that great men in time were written in history. According to Great Man Theory, great man is a single, out-standing individual can emerge in a time of crisis and steer a nation to victory, (Bug, 2011). A great man shows greatness in his own way. Greatness equates to a constellation of character traits such as integrity, intelligence and self-confidence, (Bug, 2011). Many great Filipino men were penned in the past. The late Juan Assuming was one of them. He was a self-made man, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975).He has done something larger than himself, and stories larger than his life that benefited the later generations. Just a Dreamer An article written on the Philippine Free Press defined Juan Assuming as a dreamer and an idealist, (Guerdon, 1938). He likes to plan quietly for an ideal state. He led a life dedicated to ideals of democracy, integrity, and selfless public service, Immense-Healer, 2001). Don Juan was considered as a successful seers and prophets, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975). He was a man of foresight, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975).He excelled in logical thinking and unbending attitude toward questions which in a way of thinking were crucial in the resolution of the Philippine problems, (Gecko, 1948). His Statesman's vision made him realize that while the nationalist's' platform could win the votes of the people  œ as, indeed, it was proved in the election for the Assembly in 1907 – it would nevertheless disastrous to the people if implemented. He was realistic, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975, p. 182). Warrior of Democracy Don Juan is in a way the first and the last Ant'.Due of his principles and beliefs he getting independence for the nation, (Guerdon, 1938). He was one of the eminent Filipinos who organized the first political party in the Philippines – the Federal Party, for the purpose of promoting permanent invasion of the Philippines to the United States and its eventual admission as one of the States of the American Union, Gecko, 1948). Assuming came to be known as a supporter of the party. He sincerely believed that a step by step democratic system was good for the Filipino people. That, to achieve political independence it must coincide with economic independence as well.He knew it would take some time for the economy to be viable because of the Revolution a nd Filipino-American War, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975). He gave full support in the restoration of peace and order after the Filipino-American war. Yet, the Federal Party found out that there was no favorable response to their appeal from the Filipino people so they decided to dissolve it, (Gecko, 1948). The dissolution of Federal Party gave way to birth of Progression Party or the Partied National Progression, Juan Assuming as the Vice-President, which platform was not immediate independence. Its goal was to achieve Philippine independence by progressive stages. On the other hand, the Nationalists Party of Guenon adopted the â€Å"absolute, complete, and immediate Independence† as platform and battle cry (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975). The Progression party was accused of not favoring independence, (Gecko, 1948). The people wanted Juan Assuming to remises immediate independence but he did not say it because he believed it would be a lie if he did. So , the victory was easily won by the Nationalists Party again, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975).In 1930 to 1931, Don Juan was in the United States as a member of the Philippine Independence Mission which presented before the U. S Congress the side of the Filipinos on the several bills which were then the forerunners of what was subsequently enacted as the Philippine Independence Act, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975). When the first Philippine Independence Act, known as the Hare-Hawse-Cutting Act was enacted by the U. S Congress, Don Juan made a careful study of its provisions and opposed its acceptance by Filipinos.Due of its provision that even after the Philippines was granted the Independence it deserved, the United States would continue to exercise sovereignty over U. S military bases in the nation. He expressed his opposition in an article published in La Vanguard. Other men as well opposed the Hare-Hawse-Cutting Act listed as Guenon, Gondola, Recto and more. They became known as the â€Å"Ant's†. Someone, Rosa, and others who were defending and favoring the Act were known as â€Å"Pros†, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975).In the election of 1934, Don Juan ran as the candidate of â€Å"Ant's† as Senator in the fourth senatorial district. He got the sides of the people and the â€Å"Ant's† became the party in power, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975). Shortly after the election the Nationalists and the Democrat merged and created President and Senator Assuming as Vice-President. But the coalition and fusion of Nationalists and Democrat did not last, he went against Guenon when it came-up to him that the fusion of two parties would kill the opposition party necessary to preservation of democracy, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975).All through the times of Senator Juan Summons life he was fighting for the democracy of the nation until the time he was bed-ridden, Immense-Healer, 2001). Bef ore he got heat attack during the invasion of Japanese in the Philippines, he said that it was not right for the Filipino leaders to agree to any agreement as long as there were Filipinos fighting and dying in Bataan against Japanese occupation. He died loyal to his country, devoted to the cause of democracy, and seeking to always do what is right for his people, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975).He showed his love by making a tan and fighting for his own nation and his fellow Filipino. Filipinos Filipinos means love of the country. It is an appreciation of everything that is beautiful in our land. It is a feeling of oneness and togetherness with all our people irrespective of status, religion, or social position, (S. C, 1996, p. 74). In 1896, when the Philippine revolution against the Spain erupted Juan Assuming who was in his first year at the University of Stop.Atoms stopped his studies and joined and served as secretary of the revolutionary forces of Austin Nativity in Mormon Headquarters, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975, p. 73), Immense- Healer, 2001). During the Filipino-American war, Assuming was persuaded to support the American policy of pacification due to the possibility of blood-spattered and prolonged war that might convey more sufferings to the Filipinos, Immense-Healer, 2001). Throughout the times the Philippines was given the chance by the U. S congress to draft its own constitution, Assuming rejected the Joint Resolution No. Which received tremendous criticisms from the members of Assembly that revealed not only legalistic mind concerned with proper form but as well as nationalistic bent. This exposed his unstated belief that the Filipinos desired no less than independence, Immense-Healer, 2001, p. 54). It was for the good of people that he remained in the opposition, (Association, Philippine Historical, 1975, p. 182). Politician Don Juan involved himself in politics in 1901. He presents a unique profile off Filipino Politic ian, Immense-Healer, 2001, p. 170).Senator Juan Summons political success and immortality did not lie in having taken high positions in the government Assuming provided the Filipinos with a model for a new brand of politics. He believed that politics was not solely the pursuit of political power. Rather, it was a way by which the people could be informed and educated about the issues that mattered in their lives, Immense-Healer, 2001, p. 170). Serving the Filipino people and not winning was the primary goal of Juan Assuming when he ran for elections, Immense-Healer, 2001).Distinguished Men of Time Aside from Don Juan Assuming there were as well prominent Filipino men who fought and sacrificed their lives for the comfort and freedom the present generation is enjoying. Men who coincidentally, shared same principles, beliefs, love for the nation and fellowmen, and warriors of democracy, showed Filipinos, and as well Laotians. Evil B. Xavier: The Impossible Dreamer (1942-1946) â€Å"If you tilt at windmills, you either get flung to the mud or rare tossed right up to the stars† – Evolve Xavier. The â€Å"Impossible Dreamer† as known to his colleagues and friends was born October 31, 1942 in upland town of Hamlin, Antique. He studied at Atone University and became a member of LAB Party. He was a friend to Benign â€Å"Ninny' Aquinas and they shared the same political dream: for democracy to flourish once again in the Philippines. He decided to run for Constitutional Convention when he realized that he had to e part of the political system in order to effect change, although he lost, the following year he ran for governor of Antique and became one of the youngest governors in the said province. In his campaign letter, he declared that he was running because he wanted to restore to people, especially children, the ability to dream. The children of his time adored him and were attracted to his idealism and charisma. His organization was his people a nd his bailiwick was the faith he induced in them. He pushed for people- centered, resource-based development long before the political structures and attitudes became ready for it. He worked under the constraints of Martial Law as a member of the opposition. In 1980, Nora recalled that when his brother Beaver) stepped down and asked what he will do after doing so, said â€Å"l will continue to be a dreamer, I will continue to tilt against the windmill†. Xavier decided he could no longer serve under a regime whose laws and principles were in conflict with his morals. His family and lived in peace and ease. It was the assassination of his colleague, Ninny that Jolted Xavier out of Contentment and brought him back to Philippines. He said he has a role to play as a freeman not someone bound by Martial Law.Indeed in 1984, two years before his death, he ran for Antique's lone Assemblyman Seat in Batsman Bananas. On May 13, the eve of the elections, seven of Saver's campaign workers were crossing the Panning Bridge when they were ambushed from all sides by armed men. On the day of declaration of election winner, returns showed Xavier leading, until the returns from San Regimes, suspiciously wrapped in cement paper showed otherwise. Predictability, Pacification, Marco's ally, announced the winner. Xavier cried electoral fraud and filed a case but was dismissed by the Commission on Elections. So, he brought the protest to Supreme Court but again buried until 1986. There were times Xavier would lose hope, when he feared that Antique would never be free of its warlord politics and that the Philippines would always remain chaotic. But hope came when Marco's announced the holding of snap election. Carbon Aquinas declared her candidacy for president after supporters gathered one million signatures. Xavier decided to become Aquinas campaign manager in Antique. It was a decision that would cost him his life. On February 1 1, Xavier spent his morning at the Provincial Ca pitol, monitoring the invasion of election returns. When at 10:45 a. M. He was killed by six hooded men wielding 16 riffles. More than 50,000 Antiques wanted to see and mourn for him. It took 21 hours and 200 kilometers through 12 towns for his body to arrive at San Jose where he was buried on February 20. Two days after he was buried, the DEEDS People Power Revolution began, (Balloon, 2006). Lorenz M. Tanana â€Å"Aka-Tanana': Nationalist at Heart and in Deed â€Å"To him everything that was inimical to the interest of the Philippines and of the Filipino people was to be rejected. All ideals he embraced though many and di verse came under one roof; Nationalism. It was his personal trademark, a lifelong battle he fought with his body, mind, heart, and soul. Soon he became synonymous with the concept of Nationalism. As a senator, he was not only a brilliant lawmaker but also a public servant who

Shown Before Photoshopped

By living in a visual world, companies frequently run ads using photoshopped pictures. The image presented is near perfect in appearance, yet it is not always truthful. Despite the numerous cautions implied by doctors or inscribed on cigarette packets, smoking has been a fashionable trend throughout the years. Some advertisements influence individuals in becoming addicted to the nicotine inside the health hazard wrapped within paper. Other advertisements tend to sway the viewer into pondering the general concern of the problem at hand.Photographer Mike Stubbs’s photo of Terrie Hall focuses on his subject’s physical appearance not altered in photoshop, instead, altered by surgery. By presenting Terrie Hall, a former smoker, in this advertisement, the harsh and shocking truth about smoking is exposed. This picture introduces Terrie as a 52 year old woman from North Carolina. A quarter size hole in Terrie’s throat causes one’s eyes to focus on the rest of her disfigured appearance. Directly to the viewer’s right of Terrie are large, bolded white letters that spell, â€Å"Record your voice for loved ones while you still can.†In Terrie’s lap is a small framed picture of her with her child. Unfocused, is a background of a white wall and another framed picture of the same child on a nearby table. Unfortunately in a society where one’s image is so important, these businesses and their buyers do not want people to know the underlying truth. Tobacco businesses would not enjoy the presence of Terrie Hall working for their company because of the effects of her cigarette usage over the years. The quarter sized hole in Terrie’s throat is the result of surgery to remove her cancer filled voice box and its surrounding structures. The hole, or stoma, is how Terrie breathes. Smoking also causes other life suppressing damages such as the deterioration of one’s lungs, bladder cancer, and other various chronic dis eases that advertisements do not consider when supporting their product. Most advertisements promote cigarettes by using a selection of people that are often fairly attractive. Michael Stubbs, on the other hand, selectively chose Terrie Hall for her true appearance. The advertisement or commercial commonly shows the desirable people in a party scenario where cigarettes and booze are prominent. What these companies are hiding is the truth buried beneath the photoshop and scripted lies. The CDCP, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, started the anti-smoking ads in 2012 and have continued these commercials into this year as well. â€Å"Officials believe the campaign led as many as 100,000 American smokers to quit† (Associated Press par. 5). Being the only one to return for this year’s round of advertisements out 24 others, she shares her everyday life to the public.Typically when Terrie wakes up in the morning, she has many tasks to accomplish before leaving the hous e like everyone else. But prior to breakfast, she throw on her wig and puts in her false teeth. Terrie tosses a scarf around her neck in order to cover the stoma in the middle of her throat. The puzzling message in large white letters to the right refers to Terrie’s loss of ability to talk due to the removal of her own vocal cords. Terrie Hall once stated, â€Å"It’s the only voice my grandson’s ever heard† (par. 15).Total laryngectomy is the removal of the entire voice box including the structures around it. The cancer moves into surrounding cartilage that makes up the voice box’s outer structure. From this, the trachea must adapt with the help of the electrolarynx, a device one must put to their neck in order to transmit sound into the throat. The vibrations create noise for the pathway of sound to emit into words and phrases. Terrie Hall’s appalling appearance on television caused the baffled viewer to ponder the message displayed.â€Å" It was the campaign's most popular spot by far, receiving more than 2. 8 million views on YouTube — more than any other CDC video ever posted online† (Associated Press par. 7). Unfortunately during this summer of 2013, Terrie’s cancer spread to her brain. No amount of radiation or surgery could have saved her life when Terrie Hall died in September of 2013. â€Å"She was a public health hero,† says Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Frieden also mentions, â€Å"She may well have saved more lives than most doctors do† (par.2).By living in a visual world, companies frequently run advertisements using photoshopped pictures, so the image presented is near perfect in appearance. These pictures are not always reliable. Smoking can cause oral, throat, and lung cancer along with emphysema. Photographer Mike Stubbs’s photo of Terrie Hall focuses on his subject’s physical appearance not altered in ph otoshop, but by surgery. By presenting Terrie Hall, a former smoker, in this advertisement, states the harsh consequences of smoking.

Battle of Brandywine in the American Revolution

Battle of Brandywine in the American Revolution The Battle of Brandywine was fought September 11, 1777, during the American Revolution (1775-1783). One of the largest battles of the conflict, Brandywine saw  General George Washington  attempt to defend the American capital at Philadelphia. The campaign began when British forces, led by  General Sir William Howe  departed New York City and sailed up the Chesapeake Bay. Landing in northern Maryland, the British advanced northeast towards Washingtons army. Clashing along the Brandywine River, Howe attempted to flank the American position. The resulting fight was one of the longest one-day battles of the war and saw the British force Washingtons men to retreat. Though beaten, the American army remained ready for another fight. In the days after Brandywine, both armies conducted a campaign of maneuver which resulted in Howe taking Philadelphia.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Background In the summer of 1777, with Major General John Burgoynes army advancing south from Canada, the overall commander of British forces, Howe, prepared his own campaign for capturing the American capital at Philadelphia. Leaving a small force under Major General Henry Clinton at New York, he embarked 13,000 men on transports and sailed south. Entering the Chesapeake, the fleet traveled north and the army landed at Head of Elk, MD on August 25, 1777. Due to the shallow and muddy conditions there, delays ensued as Howe worked to disembark his men and supplies. Having marched south from positions around New York, American forces under General George Washington concentrated west of Philadelphia in anticipation of Howes advance. Sending forward skirmishers, the Americans fought minor a battle with Howes column at Elkton, MD. On September 3, fighting continued with a skirmish at Coochs Bridge, DE. In the wake of this engagement, Washington moved from a defensive line behind Red Clay Creek, DE north to a new line behind the Brandywine River in Pennsylvania. Arriving on September 9, he deployed his men to cover the river crossings. Armies Commanders: Americans General George Washington14,600 men British General Sir William Howe15,500 men The American Position Located approximately halfway to Philadelphia, the focus of the American line was at Chadds Ford, astride the main road into the city. Here Washington placed troops under Major General Nathanael Greene and Brigadier General Anthony Wayne. To their left, covering Pyles Ford, were around 1,000 Pennsylvania militia led by Major General John Armstrong. On their right, Major General John Sullivans division occupied the high ground along the river and Brintons Ford with Major General Adam Stephens men to the north. Beyond Stephens division, was that of Major General Lord Stirling which held Painters Ford. On the far right of the American line, detached from Stirling, was a brigade under Colonel Moses Hazen which had been assigned to watch Wistars and Buffingtons Fords. Having formed his army, Washington was confident that he had barred the way to Philadelphia. Arriving at Kennett Square to the southwest, Howe concentrated his army and assessed the American position. Rather than attempt a direct attack against Washingtons lines, Howe elected to use the same plan that had achieved victory the year before at Long Island (Map). Howes Plan This entailed sending a force to fix Washington in place while marching with the bulk of the army around the American flank. Accordingly, on September 11 Howe ordered Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Knyphausen to advance to Chadds Ford with 5,000 men, while he and Major General Lord Charles Cornwallis moved north with the remainder of the army. Moving out around 5:00 AM, Cornwallis column crossed the West Branch of the Brandywine at Trimbles Ford, then turned east and crossed the East Branch at Jeffries Ford. Turning south, they advanced to high ground on Osbornes Hill and were in position to strike the American rear. Opening Shots Moving out around 5:30 AM, Knyphausens men moved along the road towards Chadds Ford and pushed back American skirmishers led by Brigadier General William Maxwell. The first shots of the battle were fired at Welchs Tavern approximately four miles west of Chadds Ford. Pushing ahead, the Hessians engaged a larger Continental force at Old Kennett Meetinghouse around mid-morning.    Finally arriving on the opposite bank from the American position, Knyphausens men began a desultory artillery bombardment. Through the day, Washington received various reports that Howe was attempting a flanking march. While this led to the American commander considering a strike on Knyphausen, he demurred when he received one report that convinced him the earlier ones were incorrect. Around 2:00 PM, Howes men were spotted as they arrived on Osbornes Hill. Flanked (Again) In a stroke of luck for Washington, Howe halted on the hill and rested for around two hours. This break allowed Sullivan, Stephen, and Stirling to hastily form a new line facing the threat. This new line was under the oversight of Sullivan and command of his division devolved to Brigadier General Preudhomme de Borre.  As the situation at Chadds Ford appeared stable, Washington informed Greene to be ready to march north at a moments notice. Around 4:00 PM, Howe began his attack on the new American line. Surging forward, the attack quickly shattered one of Sullivans brigades causing it to flee. This was due to it being out of position due to a series of bizarre orders issued by de Borre. Left with little choice, Washington summoned Greene. For around ninety minutes heavy fighting swirled around the Birmingham Meeting House and what is now known as Battle Hill with the British slowly pushing the Americans back.   Washington Retreats Marching an impressive four miles in forty-five minutes, Greenes troops joined the fray around 6:00 PM. Supported by the remnants of Sullivans line and Colonel Henry Knoxs artillery, Washington and Greene slowed the British advance and allowed the rest of the army to withdraw.  By around 6:45 PM, the fighting quieted and Brigadier General George Weedons brigade was tasked with covering the American retreat from the area. Hearing the fighting, Knyphausen began his own assault at Chadds Ford with artillery and columns attacking across the river. Encountering Waynes Pennsylvanians and Maxwells light infantry, he was able to slowly push the outnumbered Americans back. Halting at every stone wall and fence, Waynes men slowly bled the advancing enemy and were able to cover the retreat of Armstrongs militia which had not been engaged in the fighting. Continuing to fall back along the road to Chester, Wayne skillfully handled his men until the fighting petered out around 7:00 PM. Aftermath The Battle of Brandywine cost Washington around 1,000 killed, wounded, and captured as well as most of his artillery, while British losses were 93 killed, 488 wounded, and 6 missing. Among the American wounded was the newly arrived Marquis de Lafayette. Retreating from Brandywine, Washingtons army fell back on Chester feeling that it had merely lost a battle and desiring another fight. Though Howe had won a victory, he failed to destroy Washingtons army or immediately exploit his success. Over the next few weeks, the two armies engaged in a campaign of maneuver that saw the armies attempt to fight on September 16 near Malvern and Wayne defeated at Paoli on September 20/21. Five days later, Howe finally out-maneuvered Washington and marched into Philadelphia unopposed. The two armies next met at the Battle of Germantown on October 4.

A Brief Summary of the Second Great Awakening

A Brief Summary of the Second Great Awakening The Second Great Awakening (1790–1840) was a time of evangelical fervor and revival in the newly formed nation of America. The British colonies were settled by many individuals who were looking for a place to worship their Christian religion free from persecution. As such, America arose as a religious nation as observed by Alexis de Tocqueville and others. Part and parcel with these strong beliefs came a fear of secularism.   Key Takeaways: The Second Great Awakening The Second Great Awakening took place in the new United States between 1790 and 1840.It pushed the idea of individual salvation and free will over predestination. It greatly increased the number of Christians both in New England and on the frontier.  Revivals and public conversions became social events that continue to this day.  The African Methodist Church was founded in Philadelphia.Mormonism was founded and led to their settlement in Salt Lake City, Utah.   This fear of secularism had arisen  during the Enlightenment which resulted in the First Great Awakening (1720–1745). The ideas of social equality that came about with the advent of the new nation trickled down to religion, and the movement to be known as the second Great Awakening began about 1790. Specifically, Methodists and Baptists began an effort to democratize religion. Unlike  the Episcopalian religion, ministers in these sects were typically uneducated. Unlike the Calvinists, they believed and preached in salvation for all.   What Was the Great Revival?   In the beginning of the Second Great Awakening, preachers brought their message to the people with great fanfare and excitement in the form of a traveling revival. The earliest of the tent revivals focused on the Appalachian frontier, but they quickly moved into the area of the original colonies. These revivals were social events where faith was renewed. The Baptists and Methodists often worked together in these revivals. Both religions believed in free will with personal redemption. The Baptists were highly decentralized with no hierarchical structure in place and preachers lived and worked among their congregation.  The Methodists, on the  other hand, had more of an internal structure in place. Individual preachers like the Methodist bishop Francis Asbury (1745–1816) and the Backwoods Preacher Peter Cartwright (1785–1872) would travel the frontier on horseback converting people to the Methodist faith. They were quite successful and by the 1840s the Methodists were the largest Protestant group in America.   Revival meetings were not restricted to the frontier or to white people. In many areas, particularly the south, blacks held separate revivals at the same time with the two groups joining together on the last day. Black Harry Hosier (1750–1906), the first African American Methodist preacher and a fabled orator despite being illiterate, was a crossover success in both black and white revivals.  His efforts and those of the ordained minister Richard Allen (1760–1831) led to the founding of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) in 1794. The revival meetings were not small affairs. Thousands would meet in camp meetings, and many times the event turned quite chaotic with impromptu singing or shouting, individuals speaking in tongues, and dancing in the aisles.   What Is a Burned Over District? The height of the Second Great Awakening came in the 1830s. There was a  great increase of churches across the nation, particularly across New England. So much excitement and intensity accompanied evangelical revivals that in upper New York and Canada, areas were titled Burned Over Districts- where spiritual fervor was so high it seemed to set the places on fire.   The most significant revivalist in this area was the Presbyterian minister Charles Grandison Finney (1792–1875) who was ordained in 1823. One key change he made was in promoting mass conversions during revival meetings. No longer were individuals converting alone. Instead, they were joined by neighbors, converting en masse.  In 1839, Finney preached in Rochester and made an estimated 100,000 converts. When Did Mormonism Arise?   One significant by-product of the revival furor in the Burned-Over Districts was the founding of Mormonism. Joseph Smith (1805–1844) lived in upstate New York when he received visions in 1820. A few years later, he reported the discovery of the Book of Mormon, which he said was a lost section of the Bible. He soon founded his own church and began converting people to his faith. Soon persecuted for their beliefs, the group left New York moving first to Ohio, then Missouri, and finally Nauvoo, Illinois where they lived for five years. At that time, an anti-Mormon lynch mob found and killed Joseph and his brother  Hyrum Smith (1800–1844). Brigham Young (1801–1877) arose as Smiths successor and led the Mormons away to Utah where they settled at Salt Lake City. Technology in the ESL elementary classroom Term Paper

Technology in the ESL elementary classroom - Term Paper Example One of the primary ways that the whiteboard can be used to help ESL teaching is in student motivation: â€Å"[O]nce a chapter section or story has been assigned and read for homework, the teacher can use an electronic â€Å"flip chart† presentation, displayed on a screen in front of the class, that visually emphasizes academic vocabulary and important content from the lesson. The flip chart allows a teacher to hide, reveal, and highlight text and images as necessary to motivate students† (Wappel, 2010). The flipchart allows vocabulary to be presented in interesting ways and can be used to encourage immediate participation. â€Å"To enhance and complement the teacher’s chart, each student is given an interactive tool. Using these hand held devices, the classmates can record their responses to quiz or test questions, either in an objective (true-false or multiple choice) format or using complete sentences† (Wappel, 2010). Teachers can pair immediate reinforc ement with students' answers, and students can feel that their participation is being immediately noted and rewarded. Whiteboard programs also allow collaborative on-line text editing and participation. â€Å"The on-line texts are particularly helpful in trying to get a large group of language learners to focus on one element of a lesson together. The format allows a teacher to have better control of a class and maintain continuous eye contact while directing attention to a particular sentence, paragraph, or picture in the text. The online texts also offer practice quizzes and tests, a writing lab and interactive questions, all of which may be sent electronically to the teacher† (Wappel, 2010). Eye contact during ESL teaching is one of the ways to build schemata and encourage interactive learning, making the process seem more human and less difficult (Stott, 2001). Students can be put into online groups, able to discuss and work together, figuring out each others' weak points and letting them build confidence collectively on assignments. â€Å"A bank of computers in Solebury’s ESL Center enables students to become part of an online community through e-mail, chat rooms, and posting and reading announcements and homework on the school’s web site† (Wappel, 2010). Any instructor knows that one of the most important elements is staving off boredom and prompting interest (Wappel, 2010). Whiteboard software allows teachers a wide variety of approaches. Stress, rhythm and structure exercises can be specially created which are not only different from the regular classroom process but also interactive, giving immediate feedback. In particular, the ability to encourage participation in other areas besides direct, verbal participation is useful. Shore argues that one of the ways to encourage participation and reduce stress for ESL students is to â€Å"Encourage participation in less language-demanding subject areas: music, art, physical educat ion† and provide opportunities for success. Whiteboard projects can allow students to sing along, make presentations with their own prompts, and otherwise demonstrate their skills in a non-threatening manner and setting. Whiteboards also allow participation to be immediately rewarded (Jeffrey, 2003). Jeffrey proposes a â€Å"

Discuss the importance of Emptiness in swordsmanship Essay

Discuss the importance of Emptiness in swordsmanship - Essay Example The mind enters into a state of emptiness. This state of emptiness is akin to a cup which is empty, ready to be filled. It is a force that is boundless and forms the mind facet that is central to the practitioner of kendo, and which the practitioner will experience during practice. The importance of emptiness can not be over stressed. It is of significance importance that one conquers the disturbance that is inside him, since fear arises within the body of oneself. Then, the swordsman is ready to face opponents (Westgeest 65). Mushin, or emptiness, extricates all concerns that are extraneous, focusing the body, mind, spirit and the moment, and allows all to function in a harmony that is fluid. This allows transformation of these entities, usually separate, into an action that is unitary in form and purpose (Westgeest 65). This spiritual and mental development accompanying kendo study has remained, passed on from one generation to another, mostly of warriors. Emptiness can trace its roots in Zen Buddhism, where meditation of monks involved a similar act of emptiness during prayer. It is thus not surprising to note that the code of swordsmen, known as Bushido, has its roots in Zen Buddhism and also in Shintoism. Shintoism is another root factor in the development of emptiness in
